Welcome to my blog fellow WVU-IMCers! I began this blog at the beginning of the year just to write about various branding and IMC topics that I come across (feel free to browse). Now, over the next nine weeks, I’ll be using this space for our IMC 619 – Emerging Media course to discuss just that – emerging media.

This week’s lesson already has me thinking of all the possibilities that are available today through new forms of technology and media. Initially, when I thought of emerging media I automatically thought “Social Media.” But as our lesson discussed, it is so much more than that.

  • Web Sites
  • Video Ads
  • Widgets
  • RSS Feeds
  • Podcasting
  • V-casting (or video casts)
  • Banner Ads
  • Short Films
  • Blogs & Vlogs
  • Chat Rooms
  • Bluetooth
  • In-Game Advertising
  • Social Networking
  • Social Bookmarking
  • Smartphone Apps

Some of these applications I am intermediately familiar with through daily use, while others I’m just learning how to use (such as RSS Feeds and banner ads). Additionally, I am mostly familiar with them as a personal user and am very interested in learning to use them as professional tools. Admittedly, I can be apprehensive about companies trying to “friend” me on Facebook or weary of branding subtly woven into video games and movies. Is it all too much? Must we spend every waking moment whispered and screamed at by marketing? This has me all the more curious to discover how emerging media (or “Engagement Media” as I’ve dubbed it this week) can be done right; not too obtrusive, yet careful not to be lost in the ever-growing cloud of clutter.

I look forward to this journey, and encourage any visitors to check out my fellow classmates blogs as well (listed in the blogroll).
